Remote Airstrip Operations in Africa: Planner’s Pre-Flight Checklist

Remote-airstrip planning is a chain of linked decisions—not simply a request for an aircraft. Runway suitability, operating status, weather, daylight, payload, passenger handling and the onward lodge transfer must be confirmed as one movement.

Start with the airstrip—not the itinerary label

Two airstrips serving the same reserve may have different surfaces, declared dimensions, operating restrictions and ground-transfer times. Record the airstrip name, location and published identifier where one exists. Do not rely on a lodge name alone. Ask the local operator or handler to reconfirm current operating status, usable runway, surface condition, obstacles, communications, fire cover where applicable, and any permission or prior-notice requirement.

Match the aircraft to the actual movement

Aircraft suitability depends on more than runway length. Elevation, temperature, wind, surface condition, obstacles, available fuel, sector length and take-off mass can change the payload available on the day. The operator and pilot in command make the final operational decision.

Confirm the six operational gates

  1. Authority: landing, overflight, park-entry or local operating permissions confirmed as applicable.
  2. Airstrip: current availability and local acceptance reconfirmed.
  3. Aircraft: operator confirms suitability for the conditions and load.
  4. Fuel: uplift location, grade, quantity and payment explicitly accepted.
  5. Passengers: manifest, travel documents and assistance requirements complete.
  6. Transfer: vehicle, driver, meeting point and contingency contact aligned with the aircraft ETA.

Build weather, daylight and disruption margins

Remote flying can be sensitive to changing visibility, wind, surface condition and daylight. Avoid building a VIP programme around an arrival time with no recovery margin. Agree in advance who may revise the departure, what gateway or alternate can receive the aircraft, how passengers will be informed, and whether the lodge can accommodate a delayed or rerouted transfer.

The 24-hour reconfirmation brief

Before movement, circulate one controlled brief showing aircraft registration and type, crew contact, passenger manifest, baggage totals, route and timing, permits, airstrip acceptance, fuel status, transfer contact and escalation numbers. Mark every item as requested, pending or confirmed. A supplier quote or acknowledgement is not the same as an operational confirmation.

No. Suitability depends on the individual airstrip, aircraft performance, conditions and operating approvals. The operator and pilot in command must accept the movement.

Is published runway length enough to approve the flight?

No. Surface condition, elevation, temperature, wind, obstacles, runway usability and aircraft mass also matter.

Who confirms whether the airstrip is open?

The responsible local operator, airstrip authority or nominated ground contact should confirm current availability for the planned movement.

Should baggage be estimated?

Use realistic piece weights and dimensions. The aircraft operator may require weighing and can revise the load or routing.
